The hand carved piece is associated with the healing identity of our Lady, Virgin of Guadalupe saying "La tierra es de quien la trabaja".
The land belongs to those who work it, where the traditions of how we survive off of the land are passed down from generation to generation in a symbiotic relationship healing both the land and those living off it.
She is a remix of the female goddess of freedom in honor of independence, the end of slavery and welcoming immigrants, the statue of liberty.
She flies above unseen broken chains at her feet in a dress representing her outer identity and the many influences and directions migration takes us.
The maiz on her hand replacing the torch is a metaphor for holding onto our roots, our traditional staples and the ways of nourishing ourselves and our people.
The feathers replacing the spikes are symbols of flight, migration and that everyone should always and forever be able to "Move Freely".

Vanessa "Agana" Espinoza lived in Venezuela till she was 2 years old and then left with her artist mother to the US leaving behind her architect father and the rest of her family in South America.
With half of her family living in different sides of the continent, staying connected to her roots, where she came from, and her family has always been a beautiful struggle.
Growing up in Califaztlan, at a young age, Agana rejected borders and identified as being Chicana, a chosen cultural movement that represents her struggle and pride of the diaspora of mixed cultures.
Agana is a path of Yemaya, and also means con ganas, ones desire, motivation and drive. “Soy Chicana porque me da la gana.”
Agana is a mixture and blend of the Americas, she tells stories of migration using art as a means of cultural sustainability, a tool to tell untold stories and a powerful female voice turning thought into action.
She identifies as an artist committed to social justice by raising awareness on current immigration topics through reclaiming public space with the tradition of visual narratives and storytelling through visual symbolism.
